AUGUST 28 – 30, 2009 MICHIGAN BOTANICAL CLUB MINI-FORAY AND DR. EDWARD VOSS CELEBRATION WEEKEND at the University of Michigan Biological Station, Pellston, Michigan co-sponsored by the Michigan Botanical Club and the University of Michigan Biological Station We will have a MiniForay from Friday, August 28 through Sunday, August 30 (the last weekend before Labor Day) at the University of Michigan Biological Station on Douglas Lake near Pellston, Michigan. We have also invited the Northwoods Native Plant Society, who hosted us in the western UP last summer. One of our special activities will be to honor Ed Voss, who has contributed so much to botany in this region. We will have a special dinner followed by speakers (Ed Voss and Chuck Davis of Harvard University) on Saturday evening. The UM Biological Station offers a wide array of resources: people, facilities and natural areas. On site (lakeside) living and dining facilities will be available to us. This is a family-friendly site. Motels and camping are also available in the area. Ed Voss, Tony Reznicek, Mike Penskar, Melanie Gunn, Sylvia Taylor, Ellen Weatherbee and others will lead field trips to some special areas on and not far from the BioStation property. In addition to these natural areas, the BioStation has some remarkable native American sites where anthropology and plant ecology converge in some very interesting ways. Recently, but especially during the western UP MiniForay, we heard concerns/alarm about the impact of introduced earthworms on plants, ecosystems and working forests, so we plan to show the earthworm research going on at the BioStation. Of course, there will also be a tour of the BioStation including the atmospheric research equipment and the rhizotron. The BioStation welcomes us, and this promises to be a great event. Registration for room and board has started, but you can still register. The BioStation forms can be downloaded through the websites cited below. On site room and board is inexpensive; however, the BioStation asks us to bring our own bedding. They offer a very wide range of lodging from residential cabins to dormitories to lakeside cabins (where you can listen to the waves lapping on the shores, but the lavatories are outside, nearby). If you have any questions about lodging, contact Lisa Readmond (lisaumbs@umich.edu or 231-539-8408). The UMBS website cited below provides a lot of information about the Station. The field trip program has now been posted (click on the button in the upper left). Field trip participants must register for the MiniForay. You can register through the BioStation after August 7, but after that time, payments are not refundable. More information (including travel instructions) and all the forms is provided on the websites for the Michigan Botanical Club http://www.michbotclub.org/more/mini_foray/pellston_09/pellston_09.htm and BioStation http://www.lsa.umich.edu/umbs The BioStation lists this event under Dr. Edward Voss event.
