Michigan Botanical Club and North Woods Native Plant Society

Invite members of Michigan Botanical Club, Botanical Club of Wisconsin, and North Woods Native Plant Society to a MINIFORAY in the “Trap Hills”area of the western U.P.

Saturday & Sunday July 26 – 27, 2008

Picture waterfalls, old-growth hemlock, lush hardwoods, spectacular vistas, rocky outcrops, cliff faces, steep deer-proof slopes, misty rocky creek valleys, remnants of mining activity.  The Trap Hills, in the Ottawa National Forest, is a remarkable place on the fringe of consciousness for those in the south of Michigan. The area has many species that are rare in the upper Midwest, and ecosystems that are not likely to be found south of the U.P. in Michigan.

See http://www.northcountrytrail.org/pwf/slideshow.doc for a slide show of some of our field trip destinations and surrounding area.

The host group, the North Woods Native Plant Society, consists of professional as well as amateur botanists and others interested in preserving the flora and habitats of the western U.P. and northern WI.  The event is co-sponsored by the Huron Valley Chapter of the Michigan Botanical Club.

The town park in Bergland, MI, on the north end of Lake Gogebic, will be our staging location. Bergland is about a 5-hour drive from the Mackinac Bridge in Ontonagon County.  The event will run Saturday and Sunday, and a variety of half day and all day field trips are planned.   Folks arriving on Friday may join us in the town park for a campfire and snacks.  See the MiniForay schedule.

Meals:  Sack lunches as well as a buffet dinner and program at a lakeside resort Saturday evening are available.  Breakfast is not included but may be had on your own in the local restaurant, Antonio’s.

Accommodations:  Please make your own reservations.  The following establishments are convenient to MINIFORAY activities.

Lake Gogebic Motel, Bergland, MI 906-575-3262.  Right in town, restaurant across street, walking distance to town park

Walleye Lodge motel, on lake, 1 mile from town park 906-575-3557

Camping is available at the Bergland Town Park.  Reservations not necessary; RV hook-ups avail.

For additional options or cabin rental, see http://www.lakegogebic.com/lodging.htm.  Be sure to ask how far it is from Bergland. (Lake Gogebic is 15 miles long.)

Registration must be in by July 12, 2008.  Please register for both meals and field trips.  Attendance on some field trips is limited.  Earliest registrants will get their desired field trips.  See the MiniForay schedule, MiniForay field trips and the registration form.

“Green” Weekend – We have tried to make the weekend as “green” as possible.  The sack lunches will not use plastic or foam containers, we will have recycling receptacles available, and we have arranged dinner at a restaurant that will use real dishes instead of disposables.  We ask your cooperation by bringing your own reusable water containers.  Beverages for lunch may be purchased at the local mini-mart and grocery store.  Please consider purchasing drinks in aluminum cans, which are 99% recyclable, rather than plastic.  You may return your containers for deposit or deposit them in our receptacles for recycling.  Consider carpooling to the MINIFORAY (see registration form) and to the field trips where feasible.
