Regional Chapters
There are now five active regional chapters of the Michigan Botanical Club. In addition
to the four active chapters discussed by Mr. Conant. The White Pine
Chapter, founded April 15, 1989, is centered in the western part of the
lower peninsula from Holland north to Ludington and east nearly to
Lansing. It now includes approximately 175 members. The White Pine
Chapter holds monthly meetings at Grand Valley State University.
Dorothy Sibley (president) and Beatrice Sibley (membership chair) of Newaygo have been
instrumental in the chapter's organization and growth.
Honorary Life Memberships and Other Awards
Currently the Michigan Botanical Club "Distinguished Service Award" is
presented to one or more persons nearly annually at the Spring foray, which is held on
Memorial Day weekend at various locations of botanical interest. For the last few years
the award has been an enamel-on-copper Jack-in-the-Pulpit by Michigan artist Deborah
Watkins. The history of the honorary life membership / other awards / distinguished
service award transition is unclear. See the complete
list of MBC recognition award recipients.
Publications
The Michigan Botanist continues as a quarterly publication, with
Neil Harriman serving as editor. The State Newsletter is now called Arisaema, with much of
its recent computer facelift the hard work of White Pine Chapter members Jim Doyle and the
Sibleys.
Big Trees Project
Since the death of Paul Thompson in 1994, the The Michigan Botanical Club Big Tree
Project has been headed by Elwood "Woody" Ehrle. Dr. Ehrle has worked to compile
Paul Thompson's extensive notes in a computer database. Some species records have been
published individually in short articles for The Michigan Botanist and a larger
manuscript is in preparation.
