Tired of
winter? Dying to delve into a botanical bonanza? Then
make plans today to join the Michigan Botanical Club in
an adventure for a weekend of special field trips with
expert guides and speakers all planned with you in mind.
We have retained The Lodge at Yarrow, located on 350
acres of breath taking beauty with 8 miles of hiking
trails, as our primary facility for the Foray.
Most of
our 16 field trip choices will be located in southern
Barry County and northern Kalamazoo County and will
reach across the entire ecological spectrum, from xeric
prairie remnants to sphagnum bogs, and a number of
intermediate locales, such as The Nature Conservancy's
Augusta Creek Preserve river flood plains. Our list will
include the Kellogg Experimental Forest, a research
facility of Michigan State University. We will visit
nearby, nationally known, Pierce Cedar Creek Institute
and will be guided by the director himself, Gary Pierce.
Another offering will take us to Berrien County where
stops including Fernwood Botanical Gardens, Mud Lake Bog
and Russ Forest will give us a glimpse of Narrow Leaf
Spleenwort and Walking Fern, the latter a threatened
species. Also, the listed species Ginseng, Tuberous
Indian Plantain, Log Fern and Showy Orchis might also be
viewed at our own Little Grand Canyon. Bird watching
needs will be satisfied at Audubon's Warner Sanctuary
which also has a plant list of 287 species, 15 of which
are ferns.
Speakers
will include Dr. Richard Brewer, professor of biology
emeritus at Western Michigan University, and author, and
also Dr. Tony Reznicek, University Michigan Herbarium
Curator.
The Lodge
at Yarrow will make your trip worthwhile with it's new
dining/meeting area, Thimbleberry Lounge, club room,
fitness facility, and excellent food all arranged in a
multi-level mosaic landscape. It is a small facility
with only 45 rooms so we will pretty much have the place
to ourselves.
So plan
now to be with us on Memorial Weekend, a good time will
be had by all.
