2001 - 2002 Meetings

Monday, October 15, 2001. Phyllis Higman will discuss some of her 8 years of botanical experiences  while working for the MNFI ( Michigan Natural Features Inventory) . The title of her presentation will be " Rare Botanical Encounters in  Southwest Michigan". Ken met Phyllis while leading one of the Kellogg Foray field trips this Spring. He was impressed by her technical expertise, and her practical  attitude toward saving our Botanical treasures. She received her formal Botanical training at Central Michigan University & the University of Michigan.

Monday, November 19, 2001.  Alexander Enyedi will discuss  "Plant-Viral Interactions: current research and implications of transgenic plants to the problem".  Alex has indicated that he will also cover the general, fascinating, area of plant-microbe  interactions. Alex has been a member of the faculty at Western Michigan University for 8 years. He received his formal training at the University of Ontario at Guelph ( BS, MS ) and a Ph.D at Penn State in plant pathogen disease resistance.

Tuesday, January 15, 2002. Paul Olexia will speak on the Kingdom Fungi.

Tuesday, February 19, 2002. Emma Pitcher will speak on "Indiana Dunes Flora," one of the many ecosystems Emma has devoted her life to loving and studying, and one of her favorite places.   Emma recently published a new collection of her essays, RAMBLINGS; and one of her previous books is UP AND DOWN THE DUNES.

Tuesday, March 19, 2002. Wood Ehrle speaker, "The lives, loves and consequences of mosses & liverworts".

Saturday, May 4, 2002. Slipper Valley Trail, Lowe Foundation, near Cassopolis, Cass Co. MI.  Field trip leaders: Lynn Steil and Dennis Woodland.  Morning trip.

Saturday, June 15, 2002. Mosses & Liverworts, Sugarloaf Lake.  Field trip leader: Woody Ehrle.

Saturday, August 17, 2002.  Hamilton Twp. MNA Preserve, Allegan Co. MI.  Field trip leader: Ken Kirton.

Saturday, September 14, 2002. Mushrooms, Kellog Forest.  Field Trip leader: Paul Olexia.
