"Adventures in Alaska: from Prudhoe Bay to Homer"by
Judy Kelly, Henry Ford Community College Biology professor and HVC member.
Judy has been to Alaska three times on Chautauqua short courses for college
professors, sponsored by the National Science Foundation. She took a course
on Energy Development in the Arctic for which she visited the Prudhoe Bay
oilfields. She also studied the Ecology of South-central Alaska, and this
last summer she took a course on Glaciers in Alaska. She will touch a
little on each of these subjects in her presentation which will be
accompanied by some excellent slides

Saturday, Dec. 2, 1:30 pm.
We will be joining with the SE MI Land Conservancy for their Annual Meeting
and Program to be held at the Environmental Interpretive Center on the
campus of the Univ. of Michigan-Dearborn. We will have light refreshments
and social time, followed by an update on SMLC activities for 2006 and a
highlight of upcoming plans. Julie Craves, from the Rouge River Bird
Observatory, will present a program on Bird Banding. Come out to meet and
mingle with SMLC members, Board directors and staff. Membership is not
required. Bring your friends and family. To help us plan for refreshments,
a quick RSVP to (734) 484-6565 would be appreciated if you plan to attend.
U of M-Dearborn is at 4901 Evergreen Road, south of Ford Road, immediately
south of Henry Ford Community College. Enter at the first entrance into U of
M-Dearborn and keep to the right. Park in the 5-story parking structure
(free). The Environmental Interpretive Center is just to the west of the
parking structure at the bend in the road.

Sunday, March 4 at 2:00 pm. Our meeting
will be held at the Vagnozzi
Visitor Center in Heritage Park in Farmington Hills. Heritage Park is
located on the west side of Farmington Road between 10 and 11 Mile Roads.
For those coming from the south, be aware that Farmington Rd. does not
continue through the city of Farmington. Further information about the park

Our program will be given by Jan Ellison, President of The Belle Isle
Botanical Society. BIBS
assists and supports the preservation of the Anna Scripps Whitcomb
Conservatory, gardens and
greenhouses; supports and further advances all gardening preservation
efforts by the City of Detroit on the Conservatory grounds, provides
educational programs for adults and children, provides volunteers to work in
the Conservatory, gardens and greenhouses, and raises funds for these
purposes. BIBS is moving in a new direction in assisting the City of
Detroit with the preservation of the Conservatory. Join us to hear about
their new plans as well as their continuing efforts. Light refreshments and
social time will follow the meeting.
