Wolfgang Hauer Celebrates his 80th BirthdayWolfgang Hauer, HVC member and long-time artist for our newsletter, was honored at a special birthday party hosted by the Neighborhood Senior Services (NS) of Ann Arbor. Friends from the People's Co-op and the Leslie Science Center joined in the gala event. According to Molly Resnik, President of NSS, "Friends have always been an important part of Wolfgang's life. As a young man he and his parents lost all of their family and friends when they escaped from Nazi Germany in 1940." Happy Birthday Wolfgang. November Meeting ReviewAt the November meeting, Barb Madsen vividly described the establishment of a plan for monitoring the vegetation on Grand Island, which is located north of Munising in Lake Superior. Working with the Forest Service, who manages the park, Barb developed (in three years) a ;plan for studying certain areas of the park with a goal of identifying and caring for the vegetation of an island little trampled by man. In developing this plan, Barb chose several definite, diverse spots and designated exact dimensions of each area; inventoried the plants therein; erected permanent markers when needed; and took photographs. All such details will be helpful to others who continue the project. Her notes were most explicit: "Take pictures of lichen on a cloudy day." "Have the third fencepost from the lake in the middle of the photo." One feature of the island it that it is supposed to have the world's largest beaver impoundment on a lake within an island. An interesting floral sighting on the island is a plant that was a hybrid of two different grass genera. All in all, Grand Island is a beautiful place that will remain so with watchful attention.
